What started as an observation in 2013 by Jim Wegener, a seasoned nurse, engineer, and football advocate—quickly became a game-changing innovation. By 2015, Jim had patented the Wegener Safety Latch, a revolutionary solution designed to keep football helmets securely fastened during play.

Jim’s journey wasn’t just about invention; it was about impact. With over 20 years in the medical field, he saw firsthand the devastating effects of head injuries, particularly in football. Fueled by a passion for player safety, he dedicated himself to ensuring athletes—from youth leagues to college programs—had access to better protection. His relentless drive took him across the country, introducing the latch to major football programs, including Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Nebraska, and SEC powerhouses like Ole Miss and Arkansas. Schools at all levels embraced the innovation, recognizing its potential to enhance player safety.

Our latch, made from airplane-grade aluminum and glass-infused nylon, ensures a secure fit that won’t break or disengage unintentionally. For Hunter, the impact of the Wegener Safety Latch is personal. As a high school football player, he wore the latch himself, working alongside Jim to test and refine the product. After high school, his athletic career took him to Boston, where he played collegiate rugby. His passion for player safety continues to drive him as he advocates for better protection across all contact sports, ensuring future generations can play with confidence.
